'almost' is always better
This happened on 09/08/2006. we were driving back towards alameda friday night(me driving, dylan passenger side, and chris in the back). we were driving behind ej's car. Ej was a little tipsy -kept on stepping on his brakes and swerving a lot - so we decided to follow him to make sure he gets home safe. After a few minutes, chris said he had to pee. I asked him if he wants me to exit at the next possible exit to find bathroom or stick with ej. he said he'll hold it til ej gets home. he said, just exit as ej exits. i thought he's going to pee at ej's house.
but after we took the exit, ej made a left turn, and chris called him to say goodbye. i asked him, arent you going to pee at his house? he said no, you can turn around at the next street. and when we're about to take a ramp towards the freeway. he said stop here i can;t hold it no more sumthing sumthing. and i, STUPID and GULLIBLE ME, pulled over to the side. he urinated and when he was returning to the car, a patrol truck pulled up behind us. GOD! you wouldn't believe how fast and loud my heartbeats were. i can feel my blood pressure going up...my thoughts were full of regret and debate. hearing the cop's voice over what-seems-to-be-a-speaker, i was calculating the repercussions if i get a citation.
anyway, what seemed like a scene out of movie just materialized right in front of my eyes. the cop asked for my license, registration, and proof of insurance. my hand was literally shaking as i took them out and handed them to the cop. he asked why did we stop. i said he needed to pee. he asked me to step out and follow him towards his truck. (at this point, i remember telling myself i didn;t do anything wrong, i am strong, everything will be ok)
he asked me to stand straight, hands on the side, and follow his pointed finger using my eyes. So, he stood in front of me, and move his finger left, right, up, down, so many times and in different order that i forgot. it was windy, my eyes were getting tired from moving, but i tried my best not to blink and follow the cop's finger. here's an excerpt:
cop:did u have any drink tonight?
anna: no sir (i only had one shot of malibu, but it was 2hours ago my body definitely had flushed it out, and it was nothing..at this point, i stuck with my instinct to deny...)
cop: u know, if you had even a tiny bit of alcohol, tell me now.
anna: i didn't drink sir (i told myself to stick with 'no', bec changing it will get me into more trouble)
cop: your eyes tell me you had something...
anna: i didn't had any (no, its just my eyes having trouble following his finger bec it was windy)
cop:maybe you're nervous so we'll repeat the eye test after a couple of moments, try to relax
anna: sorry im really nervous and shaking because this is the first time i got pulled over and...im sorry sir...he couldn't hold his pee any longer and..
cop;and you couldn't find any restroom?
anna: no, we couldn;t find any
cop: and you came from where?
anna: davis
cop: where are you going?
anna: we're going back to alameda. and we took the exit hoping we'd find restroom, but we couldn't find any, and he said he couldn't hold it any longer. he told me to stop.and i dont want him to pee in my car so i stop...
cop: you know you're the driver and you're not suppose to stop here. this is dangerous not only to your passengers but to other drivers as well...
anna: im really really sorry and now i know..i promise i wouldn;t do it again
so the cop did the eye test again, and i think the results were better, but he pulled out his notebook, and was about to write something. I think i said, please sir, dont give me a ticket, can this be a warning? i mean, it was a mistake and i definitely learn from this and i won't do this again...im really sorry (and at the same time, i found myself clasping my hands together and putting it on my sternum)..and then he said, ok ill let you go this time, but what you did will get you a citation.now, go back to your car. and i went back to my car and drove back home. this was definitely one of the scariest moments in my life. its not a big deal, its just traumatic for me...and its helpful pouring it out...
